Ignorance is Bliss
‘Ignorance is Bliss’ is an ongoing project focussed on reincorporating metal waste generated in industries such as water treatment plants and soil remediation companies into new and valuable products.
Metals are a nonrenewable resource and metal mining affects air and water quality, and all life forms. In response to this, Netherlands–based designer Agne Kucerenkaite experimented with multiple techniques to find a use for metal waste products by conducting large-scale materials research. Her research revealed great potential for the coloring properties of this waste. Metal waste from industrial sources targeted by her comes in the form of a sludge and has to undergo a number of processes in order to use it as a pigment, among them are drying, milling, and sieving. Her collection of objects from this project consist of elegant porcelain tableware, woven textiles, and ceramic interior wall tiles, which are a representation of both the small and large-scale applications of her process. The colors for these objects are generated solely by using pigments from metal waste. In this project, surprisingly, the more contaminated the raw material, the more vibrant the designed objects are.
