DuPont ™ Kevlar ® – Polyaramid – Fibre
DuPont™ Kevlar® is an organic fibre in the aromatic polyamide family. The unique properties and distinct chemical composition of wholly aromatic polyamides (aramids) distinguish them—and especially DuPont™ Kevlar® —from other commercial, man-made fibres. DuPont™ Kevlar® has a unique combination of high strength, high modulus, toughness and thermal stability. The molecules are aligned parallel to each other and are very tightly bound, making the material bulletproof. It is said that Kevlar is five times stronger than steel. It is also relatively light in weight for a material that is so strong. It has a very high resistance to heat (decomposes at around 450ºC), and unlike most other plastics, it does not melt or even expand upon heating. It is also highly resistant to cold and does not become brittle at very low temperatures. It is highly resistant to abrasion of any kind. Currently, many types of DuPont™ Kevlar® are produced to meet a broad range of end uses.
