Polymethylmethacrylate – PMMA
Polymethylmethacrylate or PMMA is also known as acrylic or acrylic glass and has trade names such as Plexiglas, Acrylite, and Perspex among others. The firm and tough material is a transparent thermoplastic, often used in sheet form as a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass. In addition to being molded into a sheet, rod, sphere, tube and monofilament format, PMMA often serves as a casting resin, in inks and coatings.
PMMA has excellent abrasion and UV resistance, and excellent optical clarity, but low temperature, fatigue, and solvent resistance. Nevertheless, its environmental stability is superior to most other plastics such as polystyrene or polyethylene; therefore PMMA is often the material of choice for outdoor applications as well.
